Melissa Shaw, CFP®
Melissa Shaw is a businesswoman and entrepreneur, as well as a wife and mother. Her talent for business grew out of her relationship with her grandparents while growing up in Oregon. She held a real estate license at the age of 19, and had an insurance license by the time she was 21.
Growing up as the youngest of 5 children, Melissa credits her birth order to much of her success. Grandpa Shaw had a plaque on his wall that read: “Learn from the mistakes of others, you can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.” I had so many good teachers in my siblings; it made good choices much clearer!
Melissa earned her financial planning degree from USC in 1986. She also obtained her CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 1986 and has spent years practicing her craft. She created the Financial Counselor Notebook as a tool to help couples learn and communicate about money for her own practice, and it is now used in offices around the country. Melissa still maintains a financial counseling practice working with couples on their finances.
Accent Insurance Brokerage is a sole proprietor business Melissa created out of her purchase of the Robert Hedloff Agency. Mr. Hedloff had been a Transamerica General Agent for many years, and Melissa had worked for him at one time as a brokerage manager. “Being a business owner requires a certain mind set, and a strong work ethic. It was a risk I needed to take, and I’m very thankful I did. We still represent Transamerica today, in addition to a variety of other carriers. I love business and the relationships we have with our brokers and producers. We perform a real service to the industry and their customers.”
Melissa married a friendly competitor in 1989, Douglas Jones, CLU, ChFC. Together they have built a family business in Jones Associates. Their two sons were born in 1993 and 1994 and are only eighteen months apart. The family loves to travel and learn about history. “We lead an active lifestyle with a lot of gratitude for our health and family.”
